    Oporto – Fresh Grilled Chicken and Burgers

    The Story of Oporto

    Back in 1986 no-one was serving delicious flame grilled chicken like Oporto founder Antonio Cerqueira used to find back home in Portugal. So he decided to open a chicken shop in North Bondi serving Flame Grilled Portuguese Style Chicken with our now famous Original Portuguese Chilli Sauce. The philosophy was simple; provide unique, simple and delicious food to friends. That is exactly how it was, everyone who came to the shop were considered friends and family… here is our story.


    1976

    At the sprightly age of 18, a young and adventurous Antonio Cerqueria immigrates to Australia from the sunny shores of Portugal

    1986

    Antonio opens his first store in North Bondi

    He brings the spicy flavours of Portuguese chicken to Bondi Beach and it's an instant hit with the locals.

    1986~

    Antonio and his wife Adelina create their unique portuguese inspired chilli sauce and launch a new range of burgers including the now famous bondi burger that people drive from all over Sydney to try.

    1995

    The first franchise opens

    Bondi Burgers and Chilli Chicken are flying out the doors. Antonio decides it's time to spread the love and opens his first Oporto franchise in Balmain & the sun logo is born.

    1995~

    For many years Antonio works through the night making 1000L of his legendary Chilli Sauce just to keep up with demand!

    2002

    Oporto expands to Queensland, Victoria & New Zealand...

    and an amazing 27 stores are opened in one year.

    2003

    In 2003 Oporto celebrates the opening of its 50th store. 2005 sees the first store in South Australia open and BRW names Oporto as the "fastest growing food franchise in Australia."

    2012

    Oporto opens it's first store in Western Australia.

    Flame grilled chicken and Bondi burgers reach the other side of Australia with Oporto launching in Perth.

    Today with over 140 stores across Australia & New Zealand Oporto has become an iconic aussie brand focussed on delivering 100% fresh flame grilled chicken goodness with Antonio's unique chilli sauce.
